2026.11.12 Inauguração da exposição “Corpo e Alma - O jazz e os seus divulgadores em Portugal”

The exhibition “Corpo e Alma – O jazz e os seus divulgadores em Portugal” focuses on the role of jazz enthusiasts and, in particular, collectors, promoters, and activists who write about music and musicians, contribute to specialist publications, and take part in the organisation of concerts, festivals, exhibitions, and other music-promotion projects.

The exhibition presents a selection of the personal collections of José Duarte and Manuel Jorge Veloso, held by the Jazz Studies Centre of the University of Aveiro. The dedicated work of these two figures, documented in the materials on display, played a decisive role in establishing jazz within Portugal’s cultural and artistic landscape and in opening up new horizons of artistic creation and aesthetic dialogue.

While associated with the preservation of the past, archival practice also reveals its relevance and vitality through the ways in which it projects itself into the present and the future. Drawing on the historical documentation assembled, the exhibition enables new interpretations and knowledge of jazz in Portugal to emerge.

By giving this archive form and substance, or “Corpo e Alma”, the exhibition brings together personal experiences and aesthetic perspectives which, viewed collectively, offer a possible synthesis of the history of jazz in Portugal and extend the legacy of its most notable promoters and collectors.

First presented in June 2025 at the Jazz Studies Centre of the University of Aveiro, as part of Campus Jazz, the exhibition now travels to Guimarães, where it forms part of the 35th edition of Guimarães Jazz.

The exhibition “Corpo e Alma” can be visited in the foyer of the Grand Auditorium at Centro Cultural Vila Flor from 12 to 21 November 2026.
