As in previous years, the residency Guimarães Jazz/Porta-Jazz proposes na artistic collaboration between musicians with a visual artist. During one week, a group of Portuguese and foreign musicians , led by the pianist and composer João Grilo, and the vídeo artista Miguel C. Tavares test each of their disciplinary borders and comfort zones, exploring new references in order to discover new expressive paths. The result of the residency will be presented and recorded live at Guimarães Jazz and afterwards published by Porta-Jazz’s record label, Carimbo.

João Grilo was born in Luxembourg in 1993 with an academic background in Piano Jazz in ESMAE. In 2018 he completed a master degree in Composition and Performance, a formative period during which the composer attended classes in three Scandinavian schools – Copenhagen, Oslo and Gothenburg. The pianist’s work is focused on the relation between improvisation and composition, using it to explore different musical territories, including contemporary music. Grilo has also composed for theatre and dance, manifesting a tendency to develop interdisciplinary intersections. In 2016 he released his first record, entitled” Como se chama o teu disco?”. He is one of the founding members of the association Interference, an organization devoted to the promotion and the development of contemporary music.

Simon Albertsen is a Danish drummer based in Copenhagen and one of the most prominent musicians of the current Scandinavian jazz scene. Collaborator of many different projects, such as the Espen Berg Trio and the bands Wako, Adeln, and MMO ensemble, Albertsen has toured Scandinavia, Central Europa and Japan several times the last years, and is featured on 11 full length records to date.

Christian Meaas Svendsen is reputed a Norwegian bass player playing in some of the most influent constellations (such as Paal Nilssen-Love Large Unit) and leading his own ensemble, Nakama. Despite his youth, he has participated on over 20 records in a combination of player/composer/producer/designer. His concept of music is not defined by genre, and he aims towards connecting the classical, contemporary and the free, rhythmic music tradition and to reach beyond the various imaginative borders.

José Soares is a jazz saxophonist born in Luxembourg in 1991. His formative period included studies at the Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho and the University of Music and Performing Arts, Oporto, where he holds the degree of bachelor in Jazz Saxophone Performance. Beside his own projects, Soares has been a requested musician for several bands with whom he has been recording his work, such as the Ensemble Super, AXES, the Eduardo Cardinho Quintet and Pedro Melo Alves' Omniae Ensemble

Miguel C. Tavares is an independent filmmaker graduated in architecture and a member of the collective DOSE. His work includes the series Specific Atmosphere (Portugal, 2016-17), the short films In Between (Hong Kong, 2017), Become Ocean (Azores, 2017) and Cloud Triptych (2017); the film A Construção da Villa Além (Alentejo, 2017) and the diptych Afastado de Quem Fala (Azores, 2018). Recently, he collaborated with a live video performance to the multimedia show At The Still Point of The Turning World. He has collaborated with artists and musicians such as Nuno Pimenta, José Alberto Gomes, the artistic association Sonoscopia, Carla Pontes, Joana Gama, Luis Fernandes and the Jazz Orchestra of Matosinhos.
