19.11.12 | SONOSCOPIA/GUIMARÃES JAZZ

Throughout its history, Guimarães Jazz has always been sensible to the profound changes in music occurred in the last three decades, having presented the public many different musical projects supported upon the idea of intersection of jazz with other musical genres and other geographies. In 2019, the festival again gives proof its inclusive attitude, embracing musical expressions which go even beyond that principle, adopting Miles Davis’ conception of jazz not as a vocabulary but as an attitude instead. Such is Sonoscopia’s case, a collective of musicians and sound constructors based in Porto, with a diversified activity creating and promoting experimental music.

Ikizukuri, Sonoscopia’s proposal for this edition of Guimarães Jazz, is a trio of saxophone, bass and drums, with an electrical and pulsing sound, formed by three musicians with different backgrounds who find in this project a point at the same time of stylistic imbalance and disruption, and a way of exploring a free and organic form of expression.

Born in 1988, Julius Gabriel is a young German composer and improviser based in Porto. Exploring the sound of the saxophone with different reeds (tenor, baritone or electrical) and frequently processing it with electronic effects, Gabriel is currently engaged in solo composition, while at the same time collaborating with several projects in Porto’s alternative rock and electronic scene. He is also member of German’s free jazz big band The Dorf and of the Blue Shroud Band led by influential British bassist Barry Guy.

Gonçalo Almeida (b. 1978, Lisbon) is a Portuguese bassist currently based in Rotterdam. With an activity divided between the Netherlands and Portugal, Almeida is one of the main protagonists of the Portuguese new jazz generation, and a frequent collaborator of other musicians such as Rodrigo Amado or Susana Santos Silva, while at the same time being a prolific participant of the Dutch’s jazz scene. An eclectic musician, open to the many different musical expressions of contemporaneity, Gonçalo Almeida is currently active in several projects such as the jazz/noise band Albatre and the free improvisation unit The Selva.

With a multifaceted career of almost twenty-years in independent music, Gustavo Costa (b. 1976, Porto) is nowadays recognized as one of the most important Portuguese musicians of his generation. A drummer and a composer with an academic curricula that includes studies In composition, percussion and electro-acoustic music, he was active in several of the most influential projects of experimental and underground music of the 2000s in Porto, having, throughout that period, collaborated with important contemporary musicians such as John Zorn, Carlos Zíngaro, Jamie Saft and Massimo Pupilo, among many others. Currently, Gustavo Costa’s work is mainly devoted to composition and artistic creation in the context of Sonoscopia, the collective of which is he is a founding member and artistic director.
